Doc’s First Lie


Rep. Richard “Doc” Hastings came into Congress on a lie, and continues to deny it to this day. Like many GOP hopefuls in the 1994 off year Congressional election, Hastings ran on Newt Gingrich’s Contract for America. He made term limits, a very popular notion among voters then, his signature issue. He told Central Washington voters that he was totally behind the concept, and even promised, in an interview on Oct. 30th, 1994, with the Yakima Herald-Republic editorial board.

That he would serve no more than 5 terms, or 10 years in office.
In the elections of 2010, running for his 9th term, Hastings told the Tri-City Herald in 2010 that his term limits pledge was “a 4th CD myth…”
